The Meeting with Samyan Mitrtown Executives: Requested for Replacing Unsafe Platform Elevators

Since Samyan Mitrtown opening we have visited several times. We found many spots where inclined platform elevators are provided. The one linking the mall’s entrance and the MRT system is worth noting in particular. It is attached to a staircase which is as high as a two-storey building, making it totally unsafe. We communicated this in the form of a letter posted on Samyan Mitrtown Facebook page a year ago. There have been no responses. The only change is that now the platform elevator itself has started to have some problems.

Platform elevators are, apart from segregating users with mobility needs from other users, a hazard. Worldwide there are many reported accidents with fatalities. Many countries have stopped using this device. We have campaigned for its ban in Thailand (see one of our posts here from 2019 https://www.accessibilityisfreedom.org/en/category/platform-lift-en/).

On 27 November 2020 we met up the executives of Samyan Mitrtown asking them to replace it with passenger elevators. Let’s see what will happen next.
