Japan sidewalk construction quality: our challenge. Japan’s approach:
Japanese sidewalks🇯🇵 are neat, equal everywhere — no bigger budgets, but no builder discretion: law, standards, numbers, acceptance.
Start: Road Structure Ordinance — urban roads need sidewalks both sides, min. 2.0 m, 3.5 m where foot traffic is heavy, mandatory paving & drainage.
Japan sidewalk standards, the numbers builders follow: curb 15-25 cm, cross slope 2%, longitudinal slope max 5%, level differences max 2 cm — measurable, walkable.
Japan sidewalk law 2005: works judged on price & quality, not lowest; contractors screened for capability; owners must control acceptance.
Materials: paving blocks, asphalt surfacing, base compaction, joints, tile edges, manhole covers flush to the surface. Tactile paving for visual disabilities is part of the job — yellow, contrasting (JIS T 9251).
Upkeep: bridges & tunnels checked every 5 yrs; sidewalk-surface manual 2016; Article 42: road administrators keep roads in good repair.
Japan isn’t perfect: many sidewalks top 50 yrs, tiles worn/missing. The system knows what to fix, where, when, who is responsible.
Back to Thailand🇹🇭. BMA admitted old sidewalks: uneven, crack-prone; new standard: 10 cm curb, reinforced concrete base, entrances flush with the sidewalk, tactile paving, etc.
New sidewalks don’t look new: 1,100+ km, 99 routes, many spots ‘demolish then build, build then demolish’. Traffy Fondue complaints top 120,000 — low construction standards (BMA), unmanaged obstructions. Deputy governor Wisanu: tearing up all of Sala Daeng’s sidewalk risks accidents; tender failed twice, one bidder😳.
Senate BE 2569 cumulative damage points: abandoned job (contract terminated) or death: 60 points off, bid suspension. e-GP evaluation live 10 July 2026: TOR, median price, winner, blacklist; projects over 300 million baht; NACC anti-corruption; BE 2569 budget 3.78 trillion baht from 1 Oct 2025. Japan’s comprehensive evaluation (総合評価方式): price vs quality from July 2026; work scores (工事成績評定点) on quality & price envelopes — an incentive Thailand lacks. MLIT discloses costing, material prices, work plans pre-bid.
Japanese ramps: world’s highest standard, most inclusive — wide, ‘everyone’ uses them easily (non-slip, smooth joints, flush with the road). People with all disabilities, older adults, parents with prams travel unaided; one system with tactile paving, one standard, one acceptance, whole route.
Japan’s strength: figures written clearly, made law, inspected for real — transparent, auditable. Then Thai sidewalks can be neat, beautiful, equal everywhere.
