Accessibility Is Freedom เข้าถึงและเท่าเทียม | Accessible and Equal
When you get off a train, there would normally have a gap between the train and the platform. Despite the gap, some trains stop at an unparalleled degree (different height level) to a platform edge. This gap makes it quite uncomfortable and unsafe, but ordinary passengers can still go through it. However, the case is not true for wheelchair users in particular of those having severe disabilities or having a power wheelchair with substantial weight. This hindrance is too risky and they cannot go through it by themselves.
Imagine you falling into that gap! What a tragedy.
In Japan, this portable ramp plate is in use for so long. PWDs, including myself, can get access into the train safely and comfortably. (Reference https://www.accessibilityisfreedom.org/en/best-basic-accessibility-service-japan-metro-train/)
We have been promoting the use of the ramp plate in Thailand for so long.
Previously, the Airport Rail Link (ARL) successfully began using this ramp plate in service. Eventually, it is BTS turn. Today is the first day the BTS operator brings the ramp plate to test in their operation. What a wonderful news!
After I have tested it, I got a new data that it can carry weight up to 300 kg. and its width is 90 cm. which is acceptable.
Anyway, I asked the BTS management better to offer 120 cm. in width. That, just in case, would be sufficient to serve some extra-large wheelchair. If you want to set a new-high standard as possible. And also I would love to see it in service at every station and as soon as possible. My pleasure.
In the near future, it would be safer and more comfortable getting in and off the train. It would also reduce the chance of accident. I always say that the incremental cost and expense like this is worth for the incremental benefit a passenger enjoy. Its positive impact would return back to the operator itself too. The virtue of this would finally contribute to the operator and the society.
I would like to give a big thank to the BTS, and wait for next one, BEM/MRT, to roll.
